According to the Wikipedia entry for Dosa , this “fermented crepe , or pancake “ is believed to have been existing in South India in 6th Century AD . !!!

Dosa – the tasty tradition, is indigenous to and is a staple dish in the southern Indian States of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, as well as being popular in Sri Lanka. The Dosa is rich in nutrients and its constituent ingredients – rice and lentils make it gluten-free and rich in proteins. There is nothing like the ultimate “Nirvana” of treating yourself to either a crisp plain Dosa with steaming hot sambhar and/or chutney , or enjoying other exotic Dosas that would keep tickling your senses for more – day after day, every day !

Vegeterian sides include the exotic Sambhar , a multitude of Chutnies , Milagai podi , Pickles and various curries / Kurmas and Sagu .Non Vegeteraian sides Chicken , Goat or Fish curry go very well with the Dosa and Idli.

However , please remember – THE SKY IS THE LIMIT to the sides and stuffings that could go with these meals!! Anything you imagine , including your favourite dishes , curries and gravies would go extremely well with a well prepared Dosa or Idli.
